Combining Like Terms โ€“ Math Adventure!

๐Ÿงฎ Combining Like Terms

A Math Adventure for Grade 7 โ€“ Let's master algebra together!

โญ 0 pts
๐Ÿ”ฅ Streak: 0
๐Ÿ† Level: Beginner

๐ŸŒŸ What are Like Terms?

In algebra, like terms are terms that have the same variable raised to the same power. We can combine them by adding or subtracting their coefficients!

โœ… Like Terms (same variable & power)
3x 7x    5yยฒ โ€“2yยฒ    4 9
โŒ Unlike Terms (different variables or powers)
3x 3y    xยฒ xยณ    5x 5

๐ŸŽฏ The Golden Rule

Think of variables like objects. You can add apples to apples, but not apples to oranges!

Click the demo to see it in action!

๐Ÿ“‹ Step-by-Step Method

Follow these steps to combine like terms in any expression:

  • 1
Identify all the terms in the expression (separated by + and โ€“).
  • 2
Group like terms together (same variable & same power).
  • 3
Add or subtract the coefficients of each group.
  • 4
Write the simplified expression, keeping unlike terms separate.

๐Ÿ“ Worked Examples

Example 1 โ€“ Simple

Simplify: 3x + 5x

โ†’ Both terms have variable x โ†’ 8x

Example 2 โ€“ Two types

Simplify: 4x + 2y + 3x โ€“ y

โ†’ Group x terms: 4x + 3x = 7x

โ†’ Group y terms: 2y โ€“ y = y

โ†’ Answer: 7x + y

Example 3 โ€“ With constants

Simplify: 2xยฒ + 3x โ€“ xยฒ + 5 โ€“ x + 1

โ†’ xยฒ terms: 2xยฒ โ€“ xยฒ = xยฒ

โ†’ x terms: 3x โ€“ x = 2x

โ†’ constants: 5 + 1 = 6

โ†’ Answer: xยฒ + 2x + 6

๐Ÿƒ Sort the Terms!

๐ŸŽฎ Drag & Drop Challenge

Drag each term into the correct group. Terms with the same variable belong together!
