Coordinate Geometry – Basics
[ Embed Your Video Lecture Here ]
This lesson introduces the fundamentals of Coordinate Geometry as per NCERT Class 11. Students learn about the Cartesian coordinate system, axes, quadrants, and how to represent points using ordered pairs.
Lesson Objectives
- Understand the Cartesian coordinate system.
- Identify x-axis, y-axis, and origin.
- Locate points in different quadrants.
- Write coordinates of points correctly.
1. Cartesian Coordinate System
The Cartesian coordinate system is used to locate points in a plane using two mutually perpendicular number lines.
• Horizontal line → x-axis
• Vertical line → y-axis
• Intersection point → Origin (0, 0)
• Vertical line → y-axis
• Intersection point → Origin (0, 0)
2. Coordinates of a Point
The position of a point in the plane is represented by an ordered pair (x, y).
• x → distance along x-axis
• y → distance along y-axis
• y → distance along y-axis
3. Quadrants
The x-axis and y-axis divide the plane into four regions called quadrants.
• Quadrant I: (+, +)
• Quadrant II: (−, +)
• Quadrant III: (−, −)
• Quadrant IV: (+, −)
• Quadrant II: (−, +)
• Quadrant III: (−, −)
• Quadrant IV: (+, −)
4. Points on Axes
If a point lies on an axis, one of its coordinates is zero.
• Point on x-axis → y = 0
• Point on y-axis → x = 0
• Origin → (0, 0)
• Point on y-axis → x = 0
• Origin → (0, 0)
5. Simple NCERT Examples
• Point A(3, 4) lies in Quadrant I
• Point B(−2, 5) lies in Quadrant II
• Point C(0, −3) lies on y-axis
• Point B(−2, 5) lies in Quadrant II
• Point C(0, −3) lies on y-axis
