✨ Multiplication – Multiply Like a Genius
1. What is Multiplication?
-
Multiplication is repeated addition.
-
It helps us find the total when we have equal groups.
Example:
3 × 4 = 12 → means 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
2. Multiplication Vocabulary
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplier | The number that tells how many times to multiply | 3 × 4 → 3 is the multiplier |
| Multiplicand | The number that is multiplied | 3 × 4 → 4 is the multiplicand |
| Product | The result of multiplication | 3 × 4 → 12 is the product |
3. Basic Multiplication Facts
-
Memorize tables up to 12 × 12 for faster calculations.
-
Multiplication is commutative, meaning:
a × b = b × a -
It’s also associative, meaning:
(a × b) × c = a × (b × c)
Examples:
6 × 5 = 5 × 6 = 30
(2 × 3) × 4 = 2 × (3 × 4) = 24
4. Multiplying Using Place Value (Left to Right)
Break numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones to multiply easily.
Example:
23 × 4
= (20 × 4) + (3 × 4)
= 80 + 12
✅ Answer: 92
Example:
34 × 12
= (34 × 10) + (34 × 2)
= 340 + 68
✅ Answer: 408
5. Genius Trick #1 – Multiply by 5, 25, 50, 125
-
×5 → Divide by 2 and add a zero (or multiply by 10 then divide by 2).
Example: 38 × 5 = (38 × 10)/2 = 380/2 = ✅ 190 -
×25 → Divide by 4 and add two zeros (or multiply by 100 then divide by 4).
Example: 48 × 25 = (4800)/4 = ✅ 1200 -
×50 → Half the number and add two zeros.
Example: 46 × 50 = (46/2)×100 = ✅ 2300
6. Genius Trick #2 – Multiplying by 9
Use the complement to 10 trick!
Example:
37 × 9 = (37 × 10) – 37 = ✅ 370 – 37 = 333
Fun pattern:
9 × 1 = 9
9 × 2 = 18
9 × 3 = 27
(Notice: Tens go up, ones go down!)
7. Genius Trick #3 – Squaring Numbers Ending in 5
If a number ends in 5, multiply the first part by the next higher number, then write 25.
Example:
25² = (2 × 3) & 25 → ✅ 625
65² = (6 × 7) & 25 → ✅ 4225
8. Genius Trick #4 – Double and Half Method
When one number is even, double one and halve the other for easier multiplication.
Example:
25 × 16 → 50 × 8 → 100 × 4 = ✅ 400
9. Genius Trick #5 – Near 100 Trick (Vedic Method)
For numbers close to 100:
Multiply the differences from 100, then adjust!
Example:
97 × 96
→ (100 – 3)(100 – 4)
Left part: 97 – 4 = 93
Right part: 3 × 4 = 12
✅ Answer: 9312
10. Checking Multiplication
To check your answer, divide the product by one of the numbers — you should get the other!
Example:
56 × 9 = 504
Check → 504 ÷ 9 = ✅ 56
11. Practice Tips
✅ Memorize multiplication tables for speed.
✅ Break large numbers into parts (distributive property).
✅ Apply quick tricks to multiply faster in your head.
✅ Practice daily with mental math challenges!
