Lesson: Equivalent Fractions
Year 7 .
1. What are equivalent fractions?
Equivalent fractions are different fractions that represent the same value. They show the same part of a whole even if the numerator and denominator differ.
Example:1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 (all represent one half)
2. How to make equivalent fractions
Method A — Multiply
Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number.
Example: 3/5 → multiply by 2 → 6/10
Method B — Divide (simplify)
Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor (when possible).
Example: 12/16 → divide by 4 → 3/4
3. Visual idea
Think of a pizza cut into slices. 2/8 of a pizza is the same amount as 1/4 of a pizza — they are equivalent.
4. Check with cross-multiplication
To test whether a/b and c/d are equivalent, check if a × d = b × c.
Example: Are 2/3 and 8/12 equivalent?
Calculate: 2 × 12 = 24 and 3 × 8 = 24. Since they are equal, the fractions are equivalent.
5. Practice
- Write two equivalent fractions for
